. >> good evening, from the magnus arena at the university of denver in denver, colorado. i'm jay lehrer of the pbs "newshour," and i welcome you to the first of the 2012 presidential debates between president barack obama, the democratic nominee, and former massachusetts governor, mitt romney, the republican nominee. this debate and the next three, two presidential, one vice presidential, are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six roughly 15-minute segments with two-minute answers for the first question, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects or questions via the internet and other means, but i made the final selections, and for the record, they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments, as i announced in advance, will be three on the economy and one each on health care, the role of government, and governing, with an emphas

you saw a fiery president obama campaigning in denver trying to point out what they said were misstatements that mitt romney made at the debate last night. so that's what they are actually trying to do. i will say as we wrote in first read, there is that kind of 24-hour period on how the campaigns can try to shake things. just seeing the body language, seeing a lot of the commentary, the obama campaign is still struggling. diana on andrea mitchell's program said president obama looked tired. you don't want to hear that from a democratic congresswoman about the president after a debate. democrats seemed a little frazled after what happened last night. politics is a burchl of up and downs, and whoever wins contests ride those ups and downs the best. >> absolutely. we say the next 24 hours. it's the next 31, 33 days. i can't keep up anymore. the reality here, i think, mark, is that people are mystified by the president's looking down. chris matthews brought that up several times. these are small pieces of the puzzle we cannot stress enough. we don't know if mitt romney will get a bump from thi

the obama campaign does not seem to be doing that. chris? >> when you read "the new york times" tomorrow, you'll see a side bar, strong night for romney. i think it's an objective -- it may be theater, but this is a major campaign event of the entire cycle. maybe the major campaign event treated as a lesson in information or education. it was a campaign event and both sides went at it to win and one side won. i go back to a couple of points. romney was able to get away with something things tonight that he's not been consistent on. he said if you have a preexisting condition and continuous health care coverage, you would be covered. tonight he said anybody with a preexisting condition, you would get coverage. he's also said that if you're living in an apartment, we don't let you die there, we take you to the emergency room. that's his health care plan. how he was able to come in there tonight and act if he was a born again somebody out of the other universe and not the guy he's been for the last several days is amazing. why obama didn't tag

right now, chris matthews continues our debate coverage from denver. it will be incredibly high >> welcome back to our special edition of ""hardball."" and we're beginning on the east coast at midnight, our continuing live coverage of the first presidential debate between barack obama and governor mitt romney. both candidates mp promised an evening of sharp contrast but the president focused on the middle class. >> ultimately it will be up to the voters, to you, which path we should take. are we going to double down on the the top-down economic policies that helped to get us into this mess or do we embrace a new economic patriotism that says, america does best when the middle class does best? >> mitt romney promised the administration of lower taxes, less regulation. smaller government. >> the president has a view very similar to the view he had when he ran four years ago. the bigger government, spending more, taxing more, regulating more, if you will, trickle-down government. >> romney was powerful throughout the debate and almost looking at the presi
